this album was a blast to work on - the players are amazing - the songs are great - its very old style country - circa 1950’s style

So we are on air with Star 98 off of Brass And Gold . It’s a shorter radio mix of the song - I edited it myself - I hope people will like it .

Call in a request and try and get your local station to play the song . It is loaded on the web site all stations get their music from - but we will have to bug them to play it - In radio lingo its on their ” DMDS ” system . It’s already being played in Barrie and Kingston Ontario .

- I have booked two extra days in moscow , for sightseeing . Any ideas ? Anyone ? after this part of the Tour we are scheduled to go across the US … i hope it all comes together . we did it a couple years ago - it was pretty damn cool .

The CD Brass And Gold :

- was recorded in Toronto / Vancouver and Hamilton . Previously i have recorded two cd;s under the band name Jack Tripper . This is my first solo cd . I wrote sang/played guitar / Produced /arranged all the songs / engineered a lot of it / and did all the digital editing which was a lot of the work .

The song writing is the most important step for me . I have the lyrics printed in a booklet with the cd . I work very hard on the lyrics and feel i have a style and approach thats my own . My song ideas come from observations of life , they come from ideas inspired by books and films i have digested . I dont write songs based on other peoples songs . That is not to say i am not influenced or directly inspired by other songwriters …I am a student of my own corral of music greats . However , I get my inspiration for the music medium , especially lyrics from art other than recorded music .
Most of these songs are about my battles with my own dark side - . Most of these songs are about my journey out of the dark places i found myself . Unlike the song “Eyes are Closed” a more uplifting song that came to me in a beach hut in Costa Rica on a surf trip … i am no jack Johnson but I have been doing an impression of surfing for about ten years . Anyway the song “Eyes Are Closed” came to me almost as a gift from nowhere - I had a “handi-cam ” and no guitar so i recorded the song with just a vocal into my camera and sorted out the chords when i got back to Canada .
When i was describing the String section approach for Kevin Fox (who wrote and arranged the string)- I referenced the classic song “Danny Boy” and old classics like “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” .
The song “Dance Upon My Grave” was inspired by a book I picked up at “The City Lights” book store in San Fransisco - this is the most famous bookstore to anyone interested in the writings of the “Beat” movement … I have been a fan since about 12 years old . My Father is an English teacher and my mother and Artist . So i was exposed at an early age to these kinds of things . The book was On “Gypsy Singing” and it talked about being Gypsy singer and how the singer should be completly drained after one song - wrenching out all there emotion into every line and left voiceless and exhausted at the end of the “telling” of the song . I combined many personal experiences and also I was thinking about a scen in the movie “Kill Bill Part 2″ wherre the protaganist is buried alive and trying to escape … the claustrophobia of that idea juxtapoosed as an emotional metaphor was the catalyst for this song … that coupled with my own relationship destructions …inevitably at my own hands …. I could go on like this about all the songs … they mean the world to me . Sorry if that sounded overly wordy - it bests describes the idea .

About the recording of the cd :
I had people from the K-Os music team working with me (an engineer and drummer that work with him) - Kevin Fox did two wonderfull string arrangments . Recording the string section was a very emotional experience - so beautiful sounding I had a hard time keeping it together in order to Produce/ Direct the session . I consider producing a cd to be a similiar role to directing a film . Of coarse there are less factors than in a film . The parts where recorded and then i took them and edited them for months - manipulating the sounds into new shapes . Lots of secret stuff went into these parts especially the drums which where recorded and manipulated later in the digital domain extensivley . The guitars and Vocals where recorded in a Church/ recording Studio in Hamilton Ontario . That studio is called Catherine Street north - people like Dallas Green and Feist have recently recorded here . 22 foot ceiling help create a wonderful musical enviroment . I have about 17 guitars and i used my collection on this cd as well as my guitar amps … i have been collecting older musical equip[ment for years - i like the “tube” “Analog” sound . once i had recorded and edited all the tracks I flew back to Vacouver to work with Warne Livesy on the mixes . warne has worked with seminal bands like Midnight Oil and has currently been working on a solo cd from Chris Walla of death cab For Cutie . I spent six 12 hour days locked in a studio out west doing the mixes with Warne at the controls …later i remixed the final song myself as I had let this one get away from me the first time . I chose to manufacture at ahigher cost a more enviro-friendly package and tried to use as little plastic as possible .

I’m performing with my band on Saturday, March 15th at the London Music Club, at 9 PM. We’re opening for hue and Danielle Duval. Here’s all the info, it’s only $5, so COME!
